Call between Deputy Minister Della Vedova and OSCE Secretary General

Italy’s Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Benedetto Della Vedova, had a telephone conversation with Secretary General of the OSCE, Helga Maria Schmid, about the situation in Ukraine. During the phone call, the Undersecretary confirmed Italy’s continuous support for the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (SMM), the unarmed civilian mission which is present in all regions of Ukraine. 15 Italian observers participate in the SMM and Italy finances about 11% of the mission budget, equivalent to about 9 million Euros per year.

Undersecretary of State Della Vedova also expressed Italy’s support for the Secretary General’s letter to all 57 OSCE Permanent Representatives, calling on participating States to refrain from measures that could further aggravate the situation. He recalled today’s telephone call between Prime Minister Draghi and Ukrainian President Zelensky, as well as the current mission of Minister of Foreign Affairs Luigi Di Maio in Kiev and his upcoming visit to Moscow on Thursday. Undersecretary of State Della Vedova and Secretary General Schimd discussed the latest developments of the crisis and how the OSCE can contribute to support de-escalation and more generally to European security.
