The Permanent Representative of Italy to the OSCE, Ambassador Andrea Cascone, took part in the 32nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum, held in Prague on 10 and 11 September 2026 and devoted to the role of technology anticipation and science diplomacy in addressing emerging security risks.
Organized by the Office of the Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities under the guidance of the 2026 Swiss OSCE Chairpersonship, the Forum brought together representatives of participating States and Partners for Co-operation, as well as international organizations, academia, the private sector and civil society.
Discussions focused on how the OSCE can strengthen its capacity to anticipate technological developments, assess their implications for security and stability, and prepare more effectively for a rapidly changing economic and environmental landscape. Particular attention was devoted to integrating scientific and technological expertise into decision-making and to the impact of new technologies in areas including water, energy and economic good governance.
Hosted at the Czernin Palace, the Forum was opened by the OSCE Chairman-in-Office and Swiss Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis and by Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Petr Macinka. OSCE Secretary General Feridun H. Sinirlioğlu also addressed the participants.
The meeting provided concrete follow-up to one of the priorities of the 2026 Swiss OSCE Chairpersonship, “Anticipating technologies – for a safe and humane future”, highlighting the Organization’s role as a platform for dialogue and co-operation in addressing both the opportunities and the risks arising from technological transformation.
